Akron was co-founded along the Little Cuyahoga River in 1825 by two men named Simon Perkins and Paul Williams. The two chose this location for the town because it was the summit of the developing Ohio and Erie Canal. The name Akron was derived from the Greek word “ἄκρον,” meaning a summit or high point. In 1833, Eliakim Crosby founded an area called “North Akron” in the northern portion of what is now the downtown area, so the word “South” was added to Akron’s name until 1836 when the two were merged to create an incorporated village in 1836.

In 1840, Summit County formed from portions of Portage, Medina, and Stark counties, and Akron eventually replaced Cuyahoga Falls as the county seat. A canal connecting to Beaver, Pennsylvania opened shortly after, which caused manufacturing companies to boom in Akron.
